BENTON, IL – Two men were arrested on drug charges early Saturday morning after a Benton Police officer noticed a suspicious vehicle near Benton Lake. According to the Benton Police report, when the officer made contact with those inside the vehicle around 3:40, the officer noticed the smell of burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle and those inside revealed drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine. Police arrested 53-year-old George R. Burger of Eldorado and charged him with unlawful possession of methamphetamine less than 5 grams and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to Franklin County Jail. Meanwhile, 53-year-old Jack D. Smothers of Benton was cited for unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and released.
