SOUTHERN ILLINOIS — Summer is quickly approaching, and that means another virus is going to come into play for residents to watch out for. Mosquitoes will be returning, and that will bring the return of the West Nile Virus.

Shawnna Rhine with the Southern Seven Health Department says the symptoms of West Nile can be similar to COVID-19, but it is only transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. She says if you have any warning signs, contact your doctor, but don’t head straight for hospital.

Rhine says the department promotes the three R’s when it comes to dealing with the West Nile Virus: Reduce the possibility of mosquitoes getting in your home, Repel mosquitoes through long clothes or bug repellent when outside, and Report any standing water like a flooded yard or a bird bath to your local government so they can help you prevent mosquito eggs from hatching.
