Centralia police have made a second arrest in a Christmas Day 2015 fatal shooting in the parking lot of a Centralia tavern.

Based upon new information, 31-year-old Anthony Barnes was arrested Monday night in connection with the shooting death of 26-year-old Leroy Roberson Jr., of Mt. Vernon in the parking lot of Party Liquors.

Barnes was arrested for alleged unlawful use of weapons. According to police, he reportedly had a gun in the tavern parking lot and was wrestling a man with whom he had an ongoing dispute for control of the firearm.

Shortly after the shooting in 2015, police arrested 30-year-old Demetrice Lockett, of Mulberry Grove, for Roberson’s death. Lockett has remained in custody since his arrest with bail set at $1 million. He’s scheduled for a January 2018 jury trial on two counts first-degree murder.

Lockett is accused of intervening in the fight between Barnes and Roberson by allegedly punching and kicking Barnes. Roberson then reportedly pushed Lockett away and Lockett drew a handgun and shot Roberson in the back.

Lockett was discovered by State Police as he was fleeing the scene. Roberson was transported to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia where he was pronounced dead.

In addition to the new charge pending against him, Barnes was also arrested Monday night for resisting arrest after he allegedly fled on foot from a traffic stop where he was a passenger. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a domestic battery case.

Barnes remains in the Marion County Jail.
