(VANDALIA, IL) — A traffic stop Saturday night on Interstate 57 near Farina has landed a 38-year-old South Chicago man in the Fayette County Jail after he allegedly fled on foot from Farina Police Chief Vernon Rose. According to the Illinois State Police, they received a call around 8 p.m. Saturday night for assistance from the Farina police chief near mile marker 132, after he stopped a vehicle driving 96 miles an hour. Reports indicate Chief Rose located a gun in the waistband of the driver Reginald Howard’s pants and that after a brief struggle Howard allegedly fled from the traffic stop on foot into a nearby cornfield. Illinois State Police say they responded and established a perimeter and provided assistance with an airplane for the search of the individual. Illinois Conservation Police, Fayette County and Marion County sheriff’s deputies, along with the St. Elmo Police Department also responded to assist on the call. ISP reports that later in the incident Howard was found walking southbound on I-57 near mile marker 129 where an ISP unit then took him into custody without incident. Howard is being held in the Fayette County Jail on charges of resisting a peace officer, fleeing or attempting to elude police, unlawful possession of firearms and firearm ammunition by a felon, as well as on multiple traffic offenses. He allegedly told police he was on his way to Centralia to pick up a relative to take to Chicago when he was stopped for speeding.
