WASHINGTON COUNTY–A Mt. Vernon Man was killed late Friday night in a traffic accident on Interstate 64 near mile marker 51 in Washington County.

The man, whose name is being withheld pending family notification was driving his Toyota Tundra eastbound on I-64 whenever it exited the roadway to the left and crashed into a guard rail. The vehicle then came back onto the Interstate and crossed over both eastbound lanes of traffic, and side swiped a concrete bridge.

The vehicle came to rest in the center of the eastbound lanes where it was struck in the driver’s side by a Freightliner driven by 62-year-old Santiago A. Reyes of Yelm, Washington. Reyes was uninjured in the crash but was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.

The Washington County Coroner’s Office pronounced the Mt. Vernon man deceased at the scene. The roadway was closed for nearly 6 hours for crash investigation and scene clean up. The crash is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. There are no charges pending at this time.
