(HERRIN, IL) — A two-vehicle injury crash happened Tuesday afternoon in Williamson County. According to Illinois State Police, 27-year-old Amanda E. McCormick of Carterville and a Deputy U.S. Marshal headquartered in Benton were both going east on Herrin Road approaching Collins Road around 3:50 when the Deputy Marshal stopped waiting for westbound traffic to clear in order to make a left turn into the parking lot near Collins Road. McCormick said she was distracted by her cell phone and didn’t see the Deputy Marshal’s SUV stopped in traffic. McCormick’s car rear ended the Deputy Marshal’s SUV causing substantial damage to both vehicles. McCormick and three children riding in her car were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries. The Deputy Marshal, whose name was not released, suffered minor injuries and deferred treatment. Another officer from the Marshal’s office in Benton, that was in the Deputy Marshal’s vehicle, suffered non-incapacitating injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. McCormick was cited for distracted driving and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
