MARION, Ill. (AP) — The prolonged state budget stalemate is forcing a southern Illinois school district to consider borrowing more than $7 million to help pay for a new high school. The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that the Marion Community Unit School District board plans to vote on taking out a line of credit of up to $7.3 million to continue with construction as the wait for state money continues. Nearly half of the $67 million project is funded through state and federal money. District Superintendent Keith Oates says that about $5.8 million in capital development grants and Illinois Emergency Management Agency funds are unavailable due to the budget standoff in Springfield. Oates said the district only has enough money to pay project invoices through the end of this week.
