(BENTON, IL) — After many years of wear and tear, city leaders in Benton are planning to start looking at what they can do to upgrade the fire department’s vehicles to help keep the public and firefighters safe. This was discussed during Monday night’s city council meeting. Some of the vehicles in the fire department’s fleet are 10 to 30 years old and repairs are getting costly. One fire engine still in use was built in the mid-1980s. The newest fire engine in the fleet dates back to the 1995 and is scheduled to be paid off this year. Council members discussed creating a plan to replace the vehicles. It’s unknown at this time when the council will take action on this matter.
