BENTON, Ill. (AP) — A log cabin that served as a popular gathering spot for generations of southern Illinois teens could have a new owner after the Benton City Council voted to seek bids to purchase the aging structure. The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale reports that the council decided Monday to seek bids for Scout Cabin. It was built in 1937. City leaders say they can’t afford to spend an estimated $75,000 to $100,000 on needed repairs for what once was known as Teen Town. Mayor Fred Kondritz says the cabin is at risk of caving in. The city is willing to consider bids to either repair the cabin or tear it down.
