(McLeansboro, Il) The race for Ward 3 alderman in McLeansboro is now over. On Election Day, incumbent Mike Stanart and challenger Dale Biggerstaff both got 86 votes. On Wednesday, both men appeared at the Hamilton County Clerk’s office for a tie breaking vote. County Clerk Mary Anne Hopfinger says state election officials told her she could do whatever she wanted to in order for a winner to be declared. So Hopfinger said she would do it using ping pong balls, something she has always done to settle lotteries and noted it was the fairest way to declare a winner. One ball had Stanart’s name on it and the other had Biggerstaff’s name. State’s Attorney Justin Hood drew the winner and Stanart won.
