BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Belleville officials have approved an agreement allowing the city to give tax breaks to a firm developing 33 acres near a state highway. The Keller Group, the firm planning to develop the site on Illinois 15, expects to spend more than $50 million on the project. The firm has said it will build a multi-purpose convenience center, restaurants and at least one hotel and conference center in exchange for some help from the city. On Tuesday night, aldermen approved an agreement calling for a rebate of up to $15.7 million. Mayor Mark Eckert tells the Belleville News-Democrat the developer will finance the entire project and receive a rebate from the city when it pays taxes. Eckert believes the development will spur economic growth in the area.
