(SALEM, IL) — A 24-year-old inmate of the Marion County jail who recently dismissed his attorney was back in court Thursday, this time on a new felony charge of aggravated battery. T.J. Robert Chumley, of Centralia, again waived his right to counsel when he was charged with the new Class 3 felony. The combined $75,000 bail in Chumley’s previous two cases remains in place. He was originally taken into custody on three Class 2 felony charges of burglary, and was later charged with Class 1 felony bringing a controlled substance into the jail. He dismissed his public defender earlier this month on both of those cases, and decided to represent himself, despite being admonished by Judge Mark Stedelin about the move. Chumley was charged earlier this month with the controlled substance case, after corrections deputies at the Marion County jail allegedly found a Risperidone pill hidden in his cell. Thursday’s charge was the result of a Monday incident in which he is accused of striking 22-year-old fellow inmate Jeremy Woodward, of Alma, approximately 15 times. Woodward, who is facing a methamphetamine charge reportedly was not injured in the incident.
