(MT. VERNON, IL) — A Christmas Day fire has left eight residents of a home at 728 South 18th in Mt. Vernon homeless. According to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department, they initially received a report of a structure fire at the Terry McDaniel home with possible entrapment on the second floor. Upon their arrival, however, they were informed everyone made it out of the home safely. The initial call came in around 3:09 Sunday. Efforts fighting the fire were made difficult due to the dense smoke from the fire and fog. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The home is considered a complete loss. All available Mt. Vernon City firefighters and Jefferson Rural firefighters responded to the scene. The American Red Cross was called to help to assist the residents of the home.
