(WEST FRANKFORT, IL) — The West Frankfort City Council is expected to name a new police chief when it meets for a special session this morning at 11 at City Hall. According to the Southern Illinoisan, city leaders are expected to name Michael Irwin as chief, replacing Shawn Talutto. Talutto is expected to be named deputy chief. Mayor Tom Jordan sought out Irwin after being recommended from other law enforcement officials. Irwin retired as commander from the Illinois State Police in Du Quoin back in 2010. Before this can be done, the council is expected to create the position and job description for the deputy police chief, then appoint and hire a deputy police chief. The council will then approve a resolution to appoint and hire a police chief for the police department. Talutto has been police chief for four years and has met with Mayor Tom Jordan several times to discuss the direction the department is going. Jordan and Talutto both agreed this decision was mutual and best for the department. The council is also expected today to appoint and hire a water department superintendent and a public works director.
