MOUNT VERNON — Doris Eileen Slater, 100, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:20 am January 20, 2024 at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mount Vernon. She was born March 2, 1923 in Waltonville, Illinois to the late Clive F. and Irene (Metcalf) Hartley. Doris married Elmer B. Slater, Jr. on January 27, 1946 in Thompsonville, Illinois. They were blessed with forty-nine years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 18, 1995.

Doris is survived by her son, Roger Slater and special friend, Pam MacPhee; daughter, Karen Pennington and husband, Paul; grandson, Scott Pennington and wife, Amanda; granddaughter, Lisa Harrington and husband, Tracy; great-granddaughters, Brittney and Caitlin; great-grandson, Austin Pennington; nephew, Alan Williams and wife Kathy; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Williams; brother-in-law, Max Williams; and nephew, Dale Williams.

Doris was a member of Universalist Church in Waltonville and played the piano for many years at the church. She loved her cats and flowers. Above all, Doris loved her family and will be dearly missed.

A Visitation will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 11:00 to 12:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 pm with Pastor Tim Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Doris’ honor to Waltonville Fire Department or Knob Prairie Cemetery.
