(SALEM, IL) — A 48-year-old Odin man has been sentenced to 30-days in the Marion County Jail, after he pleaded guilty Wednesday to the 2013 shooting death of his neighbor’s dog Jake. Anthony Shaw pleaded guilty in Marion County Court to misdemeanor cruelty to animals in exchange for a Class 4 felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals being dismissed. A special prosecutor was brought in on the case this year, but charges weren’t filed until nearly two years after Jake was killed. According to Jake’s owners, Jim and Regina Thomspson, the yellow Labrador was found dead in a ditch around 1:30 in the morning on November 9, 2013. Anthony Shaw later admitted to shooting Jake for being in his yard and then throwing him in a nearby ditch. While free on bail in this case, Shaw was arrested earlier this month in a separate and unrelated case in which he’s charged with Class 2 felony aggravated battery of a peace officer and misdemeanor resisting a peace officer. According to reports, Marion County deputies responded to the Shaw residence on Hoots Chapel Road in Odin for a domestic dispute. After they arrived on scene, Shaw is alleged to have pushed the deputy, who then grabbed Shaw and took him to the ground with the assistance of Odin and Sandoval Police officers on the scene. Shaw reportedly landed on the deputy’s leg, causing an injury that led to the deputy being taken Salem Township Hospital for treatment. Shaw is next scheduled in court September 21 for a preliminary hearing in that case.
