MOUNT VERNON — A Tuesday afternoon bomb threat delayed fans arriving at Changnon gym to watch the Mt. Vernon Rams take on the Cairo Pilots.

According to Mt. Vernon Township High School Superintendent Dr. Michael E. Smith, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, the district office received a message notifying that a bomb threat had been written on a bathroom stall in one of the high school buildings.

At that time, the district office contacted administration and local law enforcement and activated district protocol for bomb threats, which included clearing of the buildings of any remaining students and personnel and a walk through and visual inspection of all buildings by district administration and local law enforcement.

Following this action, the buildings were inspected and received final clearance by personnel of the Secretary of State Police and a bomb recognition K-9 unit, district administration, and local law enforcement.

At that time fans were allowed to enter the gymnasium and the game was allowed to begin.
