(Alton, IL) — The mayor of Alton says the city is bringing back its animal control officer after this week’s police shooting of a dog that turned out to be a pet. Alton police this week lured a pit bull that had reportedly bitten a woman into a squad car, then took the dog to a city building where they shot it four times. The animal was found to have an ID chip, leading police to its owner who said the dog called “Buster” had escaped from the yard. Mayor Brant Walker says the city will use federal grant money to reinstate the animal control officer, a position that was eliminated in cost-cutting move.
