BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A four-day tree-climbing competition took place in Belleville over the weekend. The Belleville News-Democrat reported 60 climbers were competing for cash prizes in the event that started Thursday. Climbers use ropes and harnesses to race through trees, ringing bells attached in the branches. The climbers were professional arborists, and the competition used simulated work situations the arborists might encounter on the job. Canadian arborist and tree-climber Krista Strating says people in the industry share a mutual respect and are like a family. The event is called Jambo and ran through Sunday. Spectators are welcome. Children had the chance to climb a tree using a safety harness. The event was organized by TreeStuff.com, which sells equipment to professional arborists.
