JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 41-year-old Mt. Vernon man pleaded guilty Monday in Jefferson County court to one of three charges stemming from an incident earlier this year that resulted in a police standoff for hours in Mt. Vernon.

Anthony Garrett filed an open plea of guilt, which is not a guilty plea but an acknowledgement that the available evidence would likely result in a guilty verdict at trial.

The plea was made for a Class 2 felony charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction. A Class 3 felony charge of aggravated battery and Class 4 felony charge of domestic battery were dismissed per the plea agreement.

Garrett was arrested in March on the charges stemming from a February incident where police had been informed an armed man had forced his way inside and battered two people.

Upon their arrival, officers believed Garrett was still inside the residence. The Mt Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department High Risk Team was activated to search the residence. However, Garrett was not located inside the residence at that time.

Then in March an off-duty officer observed Garrett in the area of Salem Road and Warren in Mt. Vernon.

On duty officers responded to the area to attempt and locate him. Garrett initially ran from officers but was taken into custody.

Garrett was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he has remained since that time. Sentencing in the case has been scheduled for August 29.
