Three Centralia Police Officers have been recognized by the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge for an on-duty incident where they saved the life of a person threatening suicide and prevented the individual from possibly harming others.
“These heroes displayed great courage in the face of danger and the citizens of Centralia should be proud of their quick action and selfless dedication,” said FOP State Lodge President Chris Southwood, who made the award presentation on Monday in Centralia.
The incident for which the awards were presented occurred on August 25, 2016. Centralia Police Officers Trent Timmons, Justin Enriquez and Ryan Bundy responded to a call regarding a subject who was threatening to jump from the McCord Street overpass. The officers talked to the subject to keep him occupied, but when the subject moved over the railing and prepared to jump, Timmons and Enriquez distracted him again while Bundy rushed in and grabbed him, pulling the subject to safety. Their actions prevented the subject from harming himself, and also kept him from falling onto vehicles traveling under the bridge.
Officer Bundy received the FOP Valor Award for the outstanding heroism he displayed in going over the bridge’s safety railing to save the subject. Officers Timmons and Enriquez received the FOP Meritorious Service Award for the outstanding police work they did that day that serves as a credit to the law enforcement profession.
