(MT. VERNON, IL) — Bail has been set at $500,000 for a 30-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged in Jefferson County court with battery to a child. Ronald Phillips of Rolling Meadows trailer park has been charged with Class X felony aggravated battery to a child under the age of 13 causing permanent disability. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, they were notified Friday, March 31, 2017, by staff at St. Mary’s hospital in Mt. Vernon that a child was in their Emergency Room and they suspected the child was a victim of shaken baby syndrome. The child was later transferred to Cardinal Glennon in St.Louis. Following an investigation by sheriff’s deputies and the Department of Children and Family Services, a warrant was issued Wednesday for Phillips’ arrest. He was taken into custody Thursday and transported to the Jefferson County Jail. Phillips is scheduled for an April 25 preliminary hearing and first appearance with his court appointed attorney. His bond is set at $500,000.
