SULLIVAN — The driver of a van that crashed into a school bus carrying the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes Boys Basketball Team and Cheerleaders on Friday has been charged with driving under the influence. According to a report from the Moultrie County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Scarlett D. McKenzie of Mattoon was taken to the hospital and then cited for failure to yield and DUI.

The team was headed to a game in Lincoln at around 3:30 PM Friday afternoon when the accident occured near Sullivan. Police reports indicate the bus was on Illinois Highway 32 at Bruce-Findlay Road near Lake Shelbyville whenever a van pulled onto the highway into the path of the bus. The bus driver attempted to avoid the van which would t-bone the bus, causing it to overturn on its side and skid.

Seven passengers on the bus were taken to Sarah Bush-Lincoln Health Center in Coles County with five treated for minor injuries.
