CENTRALIA, IL — Guests and residents of a motel in Centralia were evacuated Thursday after water damaged ceilings began collapsing.
According to the Centralia Fire Department, firefighters and police officers responded to the Midtown Motel on North Elm early Thursday morning to assist residents evacuate the building.
Ceilings in four rooms fell in but occupants of the other rooms were also evacuated since power to the building had to be turned off due to the damage to the structure.
The collapse was apparently the result of inadequate weather protection by a company replacing the roof on the building.
Because the evacuation was the result of faulty maintenance and not weather or fire related, the Red Cross was unable to help the occupants of the motel.
