Doris Eileen Newbury, 88, of Bluford, Illinois, passed away at 6:15 am March 1, 2022 at her residence in Bluford, Illinois.

She was born October 23, 1933 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late William Asa and Lola Lucille (Greer) Dennis. Doris married  James A. Newbury on August 6, 1954 at the home of the brides parents in Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were blessed with nearly sixty-five years or marriage before he preceded her in death on March 4, 2019.In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her sister, Norma Jean Lane; brother-in-law, Harlan Lane; son, Gary Houle; grandson, Derek Houle; granddaughter, Margaret Wheeler; and great-grandson, Journey Houle.

Doris is survived by her sons, Randy L. Houle of Paris, Illinois, James Kevin Newbury and wife, Debra of Opdyke, Illinois, and Ronald G. Newbury of Terre Haute, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Karalee Houle of Bluford, Illinois; grandchildren, Daphne Jordan and husband, John of Bluford, Illinois, Jennifer Oliver and husband, Robert of Bluford, Illinois, Chandra Ballard, Brandon Houle, Chad Houle of Bluford, Illinois, Cassandra Smith and husband, Brent, Brian Newbury, a special grandson who has been a great help to her, Jeremy Houle, Joshua Houle, Zachary Houle, James Houle, Ciera Balkenburch and husband, Craig of Fort Wayne, Indiana; great-grandchildren, Karlee Anne Skelton, Molly Houle, Samantha Leneave and husband, Brandon, Destani Houle, Chaira Houle, Victoria Ballard, Makaila Ballard, Austin Ballard, Summer Douglas, Gavin Douglas, Greylon Smith, Asa Smith, Hannah Smith, Mia Balkenbusch, Chloe Balkenbusch, Oliver Blakenbusch of Indiana; and six-great-great-grandchilren.

Doris attended school in Mount Vernon. She was employed by the stove foundry as a switchboard operator in her senior year of high school. She would go to school in the morning and would work in the afternoon. She was later employed by the G.C. Murphy Co. for eighteen years, until their closing in 1981. She later worked at First Bank of Trust (now U.S. Bank) in Mount Vernon for twelve years as a teller and she retired in 1996 from Mercantile Bank. After retiring, Doris took several vacations with her husband and sister to work on their hobby of genealogy. They visited several libraries and courthouses checking their records. They also did a lot of site-seeing of Mount Rushmore, Alamo, Grand Canyon, the light houses in Maine, and the big trees in California. Her favorite pastime was spending time with family on special Holidays and having get togethers. Doris also enjoyed to crochet and work on crafts. She made several afghans, large, small, and for the new babies. Doris was a member of Jefferson County Genealogical Society, Southern Illinois Genealogical Society, American Ex-Pow Association, and Illinois Ex-POW Association. She was a member of Central Christian Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Doris enjoyed genealogy, crocheting, and crafts. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

A Visitation will be held Friday, March 4, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Garden Chapel in Woodlawn, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Mr. J. Howards Kraps officiating. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in Doris’s honor to Central Christian Church, Ex Pow Organization, or Muscular Dystrophy Association.
