The Mt. Vernon City Council heard a second reading of the ordinance to annex property for a new Love’s Travel Stop near the northwest corner of I-64 exit 80 during their second monthly meeting Tuesday

In attendance was the Love’s Real-Estate Project Manager, Alex Fuller. He gave a quick rundown of the project and says it could mean more jobs for the city of Mt. Vernon.

The overall size of the truck stop is projected at 10-12,000 square feet which is comparable to the New Baden Love’s Travel Stop.

Fuller says this would be a good business deal for all parties.

Mt. Vernon Mayor John Lewis reiterated his excitement on the project and said it gives the city a chance to give that area a face lift.

The project is estimated to begin, if all is approved and no weather delays cause issues, this Spring. It could also provide job opportunities for local sub-contractors to work under the General Contractors.

The Council also approved an agreement to move forward with Henry, Meisenheimer & Gende Inc. to finalize plans and seek bid packets on the right turn lane project in Mt. Vernon. The project is taking place on South 42nd St. to help with the flow of traffic onto Veteran’s Drive.

The Council believed the project was necessary with Culver’s restaurant and Mach 1 gas station coming into that area.
