JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 32-year-old Mt. Vernon man was sentenced Friday in Jefferson County Court to 10-years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after a jury found him guilty earlier this year on drug and weapons charges.

Joevon Taylor had requested a new trial in the case, but Judge Jerry Crisel denied that request Friday before sentencing Taylor to prison.

A jury found Taylor guilty of all charges against him in a 2016 case charging him with Class X felony being an armed habitual criminal, Class 2 felony being a felon in possession of a firearm with a prior conviction, Class 3 felony possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and Class 4 felony possession with the intent to deliver between 10-30 grams of cannabis.

He was arrested in November after first fleeing from a traffic stop and them leading Mt. Vernon police officers on a brief foot chase from the stop.

Judge Crisel found Friday that while the prosecution failed to present any factors of aggravation in the case, the defense failed to present any factors of mitigation.

State’s Attorney Sean Featherstun had sought a 15 year prison sentence in the case, but Crisel instead handed down the 10-year sentence.

Taylor will have to serve 85 percent of his 10-year sentence. He will also get credit for about nine months of time served.
