CENTRALIA — Centralia firefighters responded late Wednesday night to a a suspicious fire late Wednesday night at a vacant house at 14th and Elm Streets in South Centralia next to the Norfolk-Southern railroad tracks.

Upon their arrival at 1400 South Elm, firefighters found smoke coming from all areas of the house and roof, which resulted in all available Centralia firefighters being called to assist.

Crews had to force entry into the home where they reportedly found a pattern of accelerant that appeared to have been poured on the floor from the front door through the living room, bedroom, hallway, and kitchen then set ablaze.

Firefighters were quickly able to get into the house and extinguish the fire. But the Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene because of the suspicious nature of the fire.

An off-duty CFPD firefighter driving on South Elm reported the house fire around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday after investigating smoke in the area.
