(MT. VERNON, IL) — Authorities with the Mt. Vernon Police Department arrested a 59 year old Mt. Vernon woman on a charge of residential burglary. Cynthia Hamilton was taken into custody and transferred to the Jefferson County Justice Center where she awaits the setting of court date and bond. Authorities responded to a residence on Evergreen Drive just before 11 p.m. Wednesday. A caller had indicated that a suspicious subject had attempted to enter the residence through a back patio door and then a side door. Authorities found Hamilton, who had matched the description given to authorities of the suspicious person, in the 400 block of South 32nd Street. Hamilton had previously been charged and pleaded guilty in 2014 with possession of burglary tools in a case in which charges of burglary and resisting a peace officer were dropped. She was sentenced to three years in the Department of Corrections with credit for 122 days served prior to trial. In separate cases, she was found not guilty for a charge of burglary in 2014 and a charge of theft between $500 and $10,000 in 2013. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity for a charge of residential burglary from 2010, and charges of residential burglary and possession of burglary tools from 2010 were abandoned by the prosecution.
