(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 35 year old West Plaines, Missouri man, accused in an alleged carjacking in Mt. Vernon last week is now facing new charges after attempting to escape from hospital staff at Crossroads Community Hospital.  Joshua Hart was in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on a Mt.Vernon Police Department case for Vehicular Hijacking. Hart, along with a pair of correctional officers, were at Crossroads Community Hospital on Saturday, when Hart shoved a table into a nurse and one of the correctional officers, and attempted to escape from the hospital. The correctional officer was able to chase down Hart and restrain him, while the other correctional officer and other hospital staff were quickly able to assist in handcuffing and restraining Hart. Hart was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center and is now facing additional charges of Escape and Aggravated Battery to Police. Hart was initially taken into custody on Wednesday and was charged with Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking, Criminal Trespass to Residence, and Resisting a Peace Officer. At 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, MVPD officers responded to Taco Bell for a report of a subject being hijacked of their vehicle by a white male armed with a gun. The suspect fled on foot after getting the vehicle stuck on a concrete curb in the parking lot. The suspect was not immediately located. At 8:06 a.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to the area of 2900 Lime for a report of a homeowner confronting a subject that was in their garage. Officers located the suspect walking near 85 Cherry Drive and he fled on foot from officers. After a foot pursuit the suspect, Hart was taken into custody in the 1300 block of Plum. Hart was identified as the offender in the hijacking that occurred at Taco Bell. Hart’s bond will be set by a judge on his first court appearance. Hart is considered innocent until proven guilty.
