(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 31-year-old Texas man was sentenced Wednesday in Jefferson County court to conditional discharge and fined nearly $20,000 after he pleaded guilty to the lesser of two cannabis charges against him, possessing more than 150 pounds of cannabis. Yunierqui Crespo, of Houston, Texas, was charged with Class X felony delivery of less than 5,000 grams of cannabis and Class 1 possession of less than 5,000 grams of cannabis. He pleaded guilty to the Class 1 charge Wednesday in exchange for the Class X charge being dismissed. Crespo and his passenger, 26-year-old Dainery Acosta-Bueno, of Tampa Florida, were arrested after Crespo was pulled over in May for speeding on Interstate 64 in Jefferson County. The Illinois State Police trooper who pulled over the vehicle noticed a strong odor of cannabis and a search of the vehicle was ultimately conducted, during which officers located approximately 154 pounds of high-grade cannabis hidden in a rear compartment. Special Prosecutor David Rands of the State Appellate Prosecutor’s Office said because Crespo was a first offender he was sentenced to conditional discharge, a form of non-reporting probation, and will be allowed to return to Texas. Crespo was also ordered to pay $19,706 in fines and fees. The same charges against Crespo’s passenger remain pending.
