(BENTON, IL) — Benton city leaders are continuing to work with the Union Pacific Railroad on how to stop traffic backups from slow moving trains on South Main Street. During Monday night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Fred Kondritz told the council that after meeting with a railroad official earlier in the day, there was an offering of certain selections of what the city can do with the railroad. The selections won’t be a cost factor immediately for the city if it takes some of the offers, which were not mentioned at the meeting. That’s according to the Benton Evening News. The railroad told the city it is not going to change how they do business seeing it operates a train for profit and wants to keep the train moving slowly. The city attorney will be drafting in the near future a letter stating the city’s wishes and will outline what it wants the railroad to do to avoid trains stopping on the tracks.
