(VANDALIA, IL) — A 71-year-old Salem man pleaded guilty Thursday in Fayette County Court to one of three charges against him that stemmed from a joint investigation by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Division. Duane Engel, president of Engel Brothers Ford, an auto dealership in Farina, was charged in January with Class 2 felony sales tax evasion between $10,000 and $100,000, Class 4 felony filing fraudulent sales use records and Class 4 felony computer fraud. He pleaded guilty Thursday to the computer fraud charge, with the others being dismissed. Engel was sentenced to 12 months conditional discharge and ordered to pay court costs, as well as $137,194 in restitution within 30 days. According to Annie Thompson, deputy press secretary for the Attorney General’s Office, the charges are related to the Engel Brothers Corporation of which Duane Engel is President. In light of Engel’s guilty plea, an injunction issued against the Department of Revenue was vacated. The injunction prohibited IDR from pursuing civil penalties against Engel unless legal proceedings had begun.
