(MT. VERNON, IL) — Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputies took two men into custody in the early morning hours Tuesday. At approximately 12:59 a.m. deputies stopped a vehicle on North Alburn Lane. The Driver was identified as 25 year old Bratten Burge of Wayne City and the passenger as 54 year old Robert Cates of Mt. Vernon. Deputies discovered what appeared to be drug equipment inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed suspected cocaine, suspected synthetic drugs, scales, and hypodermic syringes. Cates and Burge were taken into custody and are facing charges of Possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, possession of drug equipment, and possession of hypodermic syringes. Cates and Burge are being held at the Jefferson County Justice Center with bond to be set.
