(MT. VERNON, IL) — Jury selection will continue Wednesday for a Chicago man accused of killing a Mt. Vernon woman more than a year ago and then setting her home on fire. Jury selection in the trial against 27-year-old Steven Murphy started early Tuesday morning in the Jefferson County Courthouse and continued well into the evening, with prospective jurors ordered to return Wednesday morning. Both prosecution and defense expect a full jury to be seated Wednesday and for opening arguments to begin Thursday. Murphy is charged with aggravated arson and first -degree murder in connection with the June 2015 strangling death of Tamara Malin who was found dead inside the burned out rubble of her Mt. Vernon home. Murphy was initially charged with aggravated arson for allegedly setting Malin’s home on fire. But wasn’t until this May that Murphy was charged with her death.
