(Williamson Co., IL)  —  Two people suffered severe injuries in a crash on Route 13 at Spillway Road near Carbondale Thursday morning. Illinois State Police say around 10, 87-year-old Florence E. Weller of Carterville was going west on Route 13 approaching Spillway Road. At the same time, a pickup truck, driven by 59-year-old Michael E. Yates of Anna, was stopped at the stop light on Spillway Road. The traffic light turned green and Yates began travelling south through the intersection. At this time, Weller failed to stop for the red light and struck Yates’ truck broadside. Both vehicles were heavily damaged and towed from the scene. Weller and Yates were taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for treatment of their injuries. Weller was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for disobeying a traffic control device. It’s not known if they were wearing seat belts.
