(CENTRALIA, IL)– Sunday’s shooting at Laura Leake Park in Centralia wasn’t the first time 19-year-old Devale Johnson has been shot. A standout basketball star at his Georgia high school, Johnson had just signed in April 2015 with Cincinnati State College for a full scholarship to play ball in the fall. According to WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia, then 18-year-old Johnson was shot in May 2015 during an altercation over a girl outside an area high school.  Johnson was reportedly shot in the rear, in that incident. A suspect in that shooting was apprehended and charged approximately a month later. Johnson reportedly tweeted all day following the shooting about being shot during a fight meant to settle a dispute. Classmates interviewed after the shooting said Johnson was a good basketball player and popular at the school. According to Centralia Police Chief Doug Krutsinger, Johnson was apparently shot in the legs Sunday, as was bystander 52-year-old Juan Hayes. They were both airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of trauma. Their injuries were not believed to be life threatening.  Johnson is reportedly staying with family in Centralia for the summer. Hayes is also reportedly visiting the area from Chicago. Police continue to look for a suspect in Sunday night’s shooting incident at Laura Leake Park in Centralia.
