(MT. VERNON, IL) — Bail has been set at $100,000 for a 48-year-old Mt. Vernon man formally charged Monday in Marion County Court with multiple drug-related offenses. Michael Currie was reportedly a passenger in a vehicle Sunday night near Elm and Rhodes streets in Centralia, when a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy stopped the driver for allegedly failing to signal. Both Currie and the driver were asked to step out of the vehicle while the Centralia K-9 officer made a walk around the vehicle. When the K-9 alerted on the vehicle, the sheriff’s deputy reportedly noticed Currie digging in the front of his pants. The driver reportedly indicated he had cannabis in his pocket, and the deputy then asked Currie to hand over any drugs he had. At that time Currie reportedly fled from the scene on foot, but was quickly stopped when a Tazer was discharged into his back. Deputies say they then noticed Currie had a baggie in his mouth that he was attempting to eat. When they got the baggie from Currie’s mouth, it reportedly contained several smaller baggies that held substances that field tested positive for .2 grams of heroin, .9 grams of cocaine, 6.8 grams of cannabis, and 3 and a half Xanax pills. Currie was charged Monday morning with two counts Class 1 delivery of narcotics and manufacture with the intent to distribute between 5 and 10 grams of cannabis.
