(MT. VERNON, IL) — A local man is in jail after an impaired driving accident in which his vehicle slammed into an apartment building, causing an explosion. The fire at Garden Glen Apartments Tuesday morning was started by a vehicle driven by 30 year old James Scroggins impacting the left side of the apartment building 8 at the southwest corner of the lot. The impact of the collision hitting a gas line led an explosion during the evacuation of residents. When the building exploded a Mt. Vernon firefighter was injured. The firefighter was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Litton’s Ambulance, was treated at the hospital and later released. Local firefighters were on the scene for approximately two hours fighting the blaze. The building was heavily damaged in the blaze. No injuries reported. Scroggins was arrested and charged for Aggravated DUI with an accident resulting in bodily harm. He was transported from the scene to the Jefferson County Justice Center where he is being detained awaiting the posting of bond. More information is expected to be released pending the release of the report from the accident reconstructionist team. Donations of gently used clothing, household supplies, totes, and bags are currently being accepted for residents of Building 8 and may be taken to the Rolland W. Lewis Community Building during open office hours. Also, residents of Building 8 are encouraged to go to Rolland W. Lewis Community Building to fill out forms indicating sizes of clothes and needs. For more information regarding donations, contact Brenda Torres at 231-4403.
