(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 21 year old Mt. Vernon man is behind bars after being arrested on multiple charges late night Tuesday night. Officers from the Mt. Vernon Police Department were on foot in the north housing projects, in the 700 block of Conger, when they attempted to make contact with a pedestrian, Damondrae James. Officers recognized James and knew he was previously banned from the housing property. James fled from officers on foot but officers were able to take him into custody after a foot pursuit. During the foot pursuit James discarded a loaded 40 caliber handgun that had been stolen from a Mt Vernon residence in 2014. James was arrested on charges of Criminal Trespass to State Supported Property, Resisting Arrest, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. James has been incarcerated in the Jefferson County Justice Center with bond to be set. James is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
