WICKLIFFE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a western Kentucky bridge over the Ohio River that was closed last week due to high water remains shut down. The cabinet says engineers are in contact with the Army Corps of Engineers about water levels at the U.S. 51/U.S. 60/U.S. 62 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge between Kentucky and Illinois. The cabinet says the bridge will remain closed until floodwaters drop a few more inches. Cabinet engineers have inspected the levee, and the cabinet says the inspection revealed no shoulder and erosion issues like those that occurred in 2011. The span carries about 5,000 vehicles daily, and the cabinet says the closure affects north-south traffic on U.S. 51 between Kentucky and Illinois as well as east-west traffic along U.S. 60 and U.S. 62 into Kentucky and Missouri.
