CARTERVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois community college will pay its outgoing president $290,000 in severance pay at a time when it faces a budget shortfall. The board at John A. Logan College in Carterville voted Wednesday to accept President Mike Dreith’s resignation. Carterville is about 110 miles southeast of St. Louis. Dreith declined to comment. He leaves with 22 months left on his contract. But according to the Southern Illinoisan newspaper, some faculty members like English department chairwoman Kathleen Carl complained he had been forced out and that the school can’t afford to pay that amount in severance. The school has a $3.6 million budget shortfall. Tuition was recently raised by 10 percent to help close the gap. Some board members earlier expressed concerns that Dreith had applied for another job.
