(CENTRALIA, IL) — With classes scheduled to start full-day on Tuesday, parents and students of Schiller School in Centralia will be facing some inconveniences for a while, as classes will have to be held elsewhere. According to Centralia City Schools Superintendent Craig Clark, mold was discovered growing on insulation wrapped around water pipes at Schiller School. The insulation wrapping the pipes is made of asbestos. In order to remove the mold, an asbestos abatement must be executed. For the safety of the students, faculty and staff, Schiller School will be closed during this process. The abatement and rewrapping of the pipes will take approximately six weeks from the time the project begins. School officials hope to begin this task on Monday, August 24th. Students attending Schiller School will receive their instruction at Calumet Street Christian Church during the week of August 18th through August 21st. For the weeks following, additional information will be released next week. Bus students will ride their scheduled routes as usual. Students who walk or are brought by their parents/guardians will have the option to ride a bus that will leave at 8:15 each morning from the Schiller parking lot, and will be returned each afternoon to the Schiller parking lot. Parents who wish to bring their child to the church are welcomed to. Breakfast and lunch will continue to be provided to all students. If you have any questions concerning this situation you can call 532-1907 or email atcclark@ccs135.com.
