(MT. VERNON, IL) — The Mt. Vernon City Council met Monday evening. During the meeting, the council discussed the future closure of 42nd Street. Interim City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel says they’re hoping to enact the “difficult closure” by the end of the year. The council approved the rezoning of three properties. They decided to make funeral homes a permitted use. And they approved a request by a local business to rezone a piece of property for storage facilities. Also it was decided to rezone an agricultural piece of land to secondary business for a resident who is looking to one day open a classic car lot. The city heard the recommendation made by downtown development to approve the use of special parking permits for residents of the downtown area. The permit will be for those living in apartments above a business. They’ll cost $240 for a full year. But it’ll get the resident parking anytime in two hour parking zones on certain streets. Finally, structures at the Brennan Klein Baseball Field were brought up during the public portion. Dr. Christopher Klein says currently the buildings at the field aren’t doing justice to the state of the art field, once named the Facility of the Year by the Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association. Klein is now asking the City Council to have a contract with a construction company to build a new building next to the right field line. He says the new building would add dressing rooms, restrooms, a storage area, and a shaded picnic area. He believes if these improvements are made, the high school baseball booster club will be able to generate more profits out of the field, and increase tourism to the city because the team could host more tournaments. He says it’s something the city vitally needs. He says he currently has one bid for the construction, made by Bevis Construction. While the final costs from this bid reach over $260,000, Klein says he’s already had $10,000 pledged by the baseball booster club and $5,000 pledged by Continental Tire. Klein is also asking the city to create an entity for local business to donate money for the project for tax deductions. City Councilman Todd Piper says the council will discuss the matter at their retreat next month.
