BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Records show a man accused of firing shots at a state trooper allegedly pulled a gun on a Madison County deputy in 2001. Illinois State Police say Gregory K. Nelson of East St. Louis faces attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Authorities say the trooper was fired on during a traffic stop in East St. Louis. No one was injured. Nelson is in custody at the St. Clair County Jail in lieu of $750,000 bail. It’s unclear if he has an attorney. The Belleville News Democrat cites court records for the 2001 allegations. Nelson agreed to serve five years in prison for defacing a firearm in exchange for dismissing the charge of aggravated battery of a police officer.
