(BENTON, IL) — The Benton Consolidated High School District 103 school board recently decided to rehire all of its tenured and non-tenured teachers and non-certified staff for the next school year. The decision comes as the district, like many others around the state, are expected to have cuts in funding since Gov. Bruce Rauner didn’t extend the 2011 income tax increase when he took office in January. The tax dropped back to 3.75 percent from 5 percent. Officials say the general state aid payment for June will not arrive in time and will be cut back from $100,000 to $50,000. They are also looking at reducing a payment made into the education fund for special education by $47,000 and one to the transportation fund by $65,000. Since the new fiscal year begins in July, there could be a possibility that state payments could be delayed for the foreseeable future. In the end, the education fund – which pays the majority of the school district’s salaries and benefits, is set to have a projected deficit around $250,000, with an overall deficit of $725,000.
