BETHALTO, Ill. (AP) — Authorities in the southern Illinois community of Bethalto have arrested the assistant vice president of a local bank in connection with a reported Dec. 13 robbery. The Telegraph in Alton reports Bethalto Police Chief Gregg Smock says Matthew S. Liebheit reported the alleged robbery of Liberty Bank. Authorities say evidence has been found discrediting Liebheit’s claim. Smock said Friday he could not comment on the charges being filed against Liebheit. He added the FBI, which worked on the case with the Bethalto police, advised against discussing the circumstances of Liebheit’s arrest. Liebheit is being held in Alton City Jail Authorities say Liberty Bank funds haven’t been negatively impacted by the incident. Smock said the files regarding the case may be unsealed after Liebheit is federally indicted. It wasn’t immediately known if Liebheit has obtained legal representation.
