Mt. Vernon police are investigating an early morning incident that sent a 13-year-old boy to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

According to police, they responded just after 1 a.m. Monday to the 1100 block of South 24th Street in Mt. Vernon for a call of shots fired.

Detectives say the boy was in the house with several other people when he was struck. They have interviewed several people but no arrests have been made at this time.

He was initially taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon but was subsequently airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis.

The investigation into the shooting is on-going, but police say it appears to be an accidental shooting.
