(MT. VERNON, IL) — Authorities with the Mt. Vernon Police Department have taken a student of Mt Vernon Township High School into custody after receiving a report of the student being in possession of a handgun. At 11:34 a.m. Monday, The Mt. Vernon Police Department were contacted and responded to the campus. Officers made contact with the student and an airsoft or pellet gun was allegedly found with the student’s belongings. The student was then taken into police custody and no injuries were reported. The arrest was made without a significant disruption to the regular student schedule. Parents were contacted by MVTHS today to alert them of the situation. According to an MVTHS news release, all classes continued to run on their normal schedule Monday as the safety threat was “cleared.” The investigation is currently on going and criminal charges are yet to be determined.
