MT. VERNON, IL — A 20-year-old Mt. Vernon man is facing charges after members of the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department High Risk Team served a burglary related search warrant at the apartments located at 700 Main Street Friday.

According to the MVPD, the warrant was secured as part of an ongoing investigation by the police department’s Detective Division related to a residential burglary where firearms were stolen. Bond was set on that warrant at $75,000. Additionally, an arrest warrant was issued for the resident of Apartment 104, Jacob I. Lopez, charging him with the Residential Burglary. Lopez has made numerous threats to local law enforcement indicating he would shoot and kill any officer he could. The High Risk team was able to secure the apartment and take Lopez into custody without incident. During a search of the apartment, detectives located a loaded handgun. The handgun was one stolen during the burglary that Lopez’s warrant was issued for. In addition to the warrant, Lopez was also charged with Possession of a Stolen Firearm.

Lopez was lodged in the Jefferson County Justice Center where he awaits bond on the new charge to be set.
